Rules explained

Season and age groups

Under Lifesaving South Africa's rules the competition season runs from 1 October to 30 September (§3.6.1), and your age at midnight on 30 September decides your age category for that season (§3.6.2). Nippers can start at 8 with a Level 1 award, juniors race U15 to U19, seniors (Open) are 19 and over, and masters start at 30.

One cut-off for the whole season

Everyone is treated as sharing a birthday: your age at midnight on 30 September is the age you compete at, from 1 October until the following 30 September (§3.6.1–3.6.2). A birthday in the middle of summer does not move you up until the next season.

Example: a child who is 10 at midnight on 30 September races U11 all season, even if they turn 11 in December (§3.6.4, surf table).

Nippers (U9 to U14)

  • Age 8 → U9 and age 9 → U10, with a Level 1 award (§3.6.4).
  • Age 10 → U11 and age 11 → U12, with a Level 2 award.
  • Age 12 → U13 and age 13 → U14, with a Level 3 award.

The youngest a nipper can compete is 8, and only with a Level 1 award (§3.6.2a). A nipper races one age category only; the single exception is being moved up to fill an older relay or Taplin team, explained under team events and ages (§3.6.2b).

Nipper team events pair two age groups: U9 & U10, U11 & U12, and U13 & U14 (§3.6.4).

Juniors (U15 to U19)

A member who turns 14 may attempt the Junior Lifeguard Award (JLA); once they pass, they must compete as a U15 junior (§3.6.2c).

  • Age 14 → U15 (JLA).
  • Age 15 → U16, racing in the U17 category (JLA and annual retest).
  • Age 16 → U17 (Lifeguard Award and annual retest).
  • Age 17 → U18, racing in the U19 category; age 18 → U19 (Lifeguard Award and annual retest).

That is why SA junior titles are U15, U17 and U19 (§11.4.1). Junior team events combine the junior age groups into one team category (§3.6.2d).

Seniors (Open)

Seniors are 19 and over and hold a Lifeguard Award, with a valid annual retest if under 25 (§3.6.4, surf table). Some U17 to U19 juniors may also race senior events: see juniors racing Open.

Masters (30+)

Members aged 30 and over (again at 30 September) may race masters events if they hold a Lifeguard Award (LA) or Surf Proficiency Award (SPA) (§3.6.2f). A masters Qualifying Certificate allows beach events only (§3.8.1).

Individual masters events run in five-year bands: 30–34, 35–39, 40–44, 45–49, 50–54, 55–59, 60–64, 65–69, 70–74 and 75+ (§3.8.1). Masters race only their own band in individual events (§3.8.2, note 1), and have their age marked on both upper arms in surf events (§3.8.1).

Common questions

When does the SA lifesaving competition season start and end?

It runs from 1 October to 30 September the following year (LSA Competition Manual §3.6.1).

How do I work out my child's nipper age group?

Take their age at midnight on 30 September: 8 is U9, 9 is U10, 10 is U11, 11 is U12, 12 is U13 and 13 is U14. They stay in that group all season (§3.6.2, §3.6.4).

What is the youngest age to compete as a nipper?

Eight, at midnight on 30 September, and the nipper must hold a Level 1 award (§3.6.2a).

My child turns 14. Are they still a nipper?

At 14 a member may attempt the Junior Lifeguard Award, and once they pass they must race as a U15 junior (§3.6.2c). The entry tables place 14-year-olds in U15 (§3.6.4).

Why does a 15-year-old race U17?

LSA lists 15-year-olds as U16, and U16s compete in the U17 category; likewise U18s race as U19 (§3.6.4).

What age do you have to be to race masters?

30 or over at midnight on 30 September, holding a Lifeguard Award or Surf Proficiency Award (§3.6.2f).
