Age groups: nippers, juniors, open & masters

Nippers (U9 to U14)

Nippers is the programme for children of 8 to 13, and the starting point for most SA lifesavers. SA clubs run nipper training through the summer season and teach surf safety alongside racing. A nipper needs a Level 1 award to race U9 or U10, Level 2 for U11 and U12, and Level 3 for U13 and U14 (awards you need to compete).

Nippers race individual events in single-year groups (U9, U10, U11 … U14) over shorter courses than seniors, and team events in pairs of age groups (U9 & U10, U11 & U12, U13 & U14). U9 to U12 race bodyboards; boards start at U11.

Juniors (U15, U17, U19)

Juniors start once a 14-year-old passes the Junior Lifeguard Award. They race in two-year bands: 14-year-olds race U15, 15 and 16-year-olds race U17, and 17 and 18-year-olds race U19; from U17 they need a full Lifeguard Award. At national championships juniors and seniors race in the same meet (the "Juniors & Seniors" champs), separate from the nipper and masters meets.

Open (seniors)

Open is the senior category, for athletes 19 and over, with no upper age limit. Under LSA rules U17 to U19 juniors holding a Lifeguard Award may race Open as well as their own age group, and masters may choose to race Open too — see juniors racing Open.

Masters (30+)

Masters is for members aged 30 and over who hold a Lifeguard Award or Surf Proficiency Award. Individual events run in five-year bands from 30 (30–34, 35–39 … 75+), and relays in total-age groups (team events and ages). When fields are small, different bands may race at the same time but are still placed in their own band. Masters courses are often shorter: 70 m instead of 90 m for the beach sprint, 15 m instead of 20 m in beach flags.

How age is worked out

LSA gives every competitor the same birthday: your age at midnight on 30 September is your age for the season, from 1 October to the next 30 September. A child who is 10 on 30 September races U11 all season, even after an 11th birthday in December. (Internationally, ILS age categories use age on 31 December instead.) Juniors on Flagline

Flagline shows every junior's results, but with first name and surname initial only (for example "Sam J."), and junior profiles are kept out of search engines. A full name appears only once an athlete races as an adult and no longer races junior events. See privacy.
