Quick answers about South African surf lifesaving and Flagline. Each answer links to a fuller guide.
What is surf lifesaving?
A sport built from beach rescue skills: races on the sand (beach flags, sprints, runs) and in the surf (swims, boards, surf skis, ironman and rescue events). In South Africa it is run by Lifesaving South Africa. See what is competitive surf lifesaving.
What age can my child start nippers?
Nippers can compete from age 8 (U9), counted at midnight on 30 September, once they hold a Level 1 lifesaving award; they race as nippers up to U14. See season and age groups.
What is the difference between nippers and juniors?
Nippers are U9 to U14 and race shorter courses, with bodyboards for U9 to U12. Juniors are U15, U17 and U19, need the Junior Lifeguard Award or Lifeguard Award, and race at the Juniors & Seniors championships. See awards you need to compete.
Can juniors race Open?
Under LSA rules U17, U18 and U19 juniors, who hold a full Lifeguard Award, may race the senior (Open) age group as well as their own; U15 and U16 juniors may not. See juniors racing Open.
How does beach flags work?
Athletes lie face down, then sprint 20 m (15 m for nippers and masters) to grab a baton. There is always at least one baton fewer than athletes, so each round eliminates someone. See beach flags.
What is an ironman in surf lifesaving?
One athlete races a swim, a board and a surf ski leg, in an order drawn by ballot, then runs up the beach to finish. U13 and U14 nippers race the iron nipper. See ironman and ironwoman.
When are the SA Lifesaving Championships?
Usually between March and May. In 2026 the DHL SA National Lifesaving Championships ran at Gqeberha from 26 March to 1 April, with separate meets for nippers, masters and juniors & seniors. Results are on Flagline's results page.
Where can I find surf lifesaving results for South Africa?
Organisers publish results live on LiveHeats. Flagline collects every SA competition's results with club points tables, medals, club records and athlete profiles: see competition results.
Why does my child's name show only a surname initial?
Flagline shows juniors with first name and surname initial ("Sam J.") everywhere, and keeps junior profiles out of search engines. A full name appears only once an athlete races as an adult. See privacy.
What does form mean on Flagline?
Form is the average finish percentile of an athlete's heats: 100 means winning every heat, 0 means finishing last. See how Flagline's numbers work.
A result is wrong. How do I get it fixed?
Flagline shows what organisers publish on LiveHeats, so results usually need correcting there first. For a wrong club name or profile, email hello@flagline.co.za.
