Plain-English summaries of the Lifesaving South Africa Competition Manual (17th edition, November 2022): who can race in which age group, the awards you need, how each event is run, and what happens when something goes wrong. Every page cites the manual section it comes from.
Who can race
- Season and age groupsThe LSA season runs 1 October to 30 September, and your age at midnight on 30 September sets your category for the whole season. Nippers to masters.
- Awards you need to competeWhich lifesaving award each age group needs to race under LSA rules: nipper Levels 1 to 3, the Junior Lifeguard Award, the Lifeguard Award and masters options.
- Juniors racing OpenUnder LSA rules U17 to U19 juniors may also race the senior (Open) age group. What the manual says, how the JLA and LA fit in, and how the series applies it.
- Team events and agesHow ages work in LSA team events: masters total-age relays, double ski by the younger paddler, combined junior and nipper teams, and moving a nipper up.
Event rules
- Beach flags rulesLSA beach flags rules: 15 m for nippers and masters, 20 m for juniors and seniors, how eliminations work, the heads-down start and the two-minute protest.

- Board race rulesLSA board race rules: 200 m board buoys for juniors to masters, 60 m and 80 m for nippers, which boards each age may use, and the board relay.
- Surf ski and double ski rulesLSA surf ski rules: turning buoys 250 m out, knee-deep or dry starts, finishing with ski and paddle, the double ski's wider course and the ski relay.
